What is the First Unitarian Church?
The First Unitarian Church is a place of worship. It serves the Unitarian community. This group believes in a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. When they needed a new building, they chose a famous local architecture firm. The firm was called Ferry & Clas. George Ferry himself led the design work.
A Look at the Church's Design
The church's design is a good example of the Gothic Revival style. This style looks back to the grand churches of the Middle Ages. It often uses pointed arches and tall windows.
Outside the Church
Most of the church walls are made from Bedford limestone. This stone has a rough, natural look. The roofs are very steep and have small windows called dormers. The church building has an L-shape. A tall tower rises from one part of the L.
Inside the Church
Inside, the main room is called the auditorium. It has a special ceiling called a hammerbeam ceiling. This type of ceiling uses wooden beams that look like hammers. They rest on carved stone pieces called corbels. The front part of the church, called the chancel, holds an organ. It also has a pulpit for speaking. There is also a carved oak sedilia, which is a special seat. The windows have cool, abstract designs.
Why is This Church Special?
The First Unitarian Church looks almost the same as when it was built. It is very important for its amazing architecture. It is also the oldest Unitarian church building in Milwaukee. This makes it a key part of the city's history.
