The First Unitarian Church is a really old and cool building in Stoneham, Massachusetts. It used to be a church, but now it's home to Stoneham TV! This building was built way back in 1869. It has a special look called Gothic Revival and Stick style. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It's also part of a bigger area called the Central Square Historic District.

Exploring the Church Building's Design

The First Unitarian Church building is located in downtown Stoneham. You can find it at the corner of Common and Central Streets. It's a single-story building made of wood. The outside is covered in wooden clapboards.

Unique Architectural Style

This building used to have many special design features. These were part of the Stick style of architecture. For example, the front of the building had cool diagonal and vertical wood patterns. The entrance also had a fancy cover with similar designs.

The Church Tower and Steeple

The church tower was once very grand. It had an open belfry, which is where bells would hang. Above that was an octagonal steeple. This means it had eight sides! The steeple even had four clock faces. They were placed inside small dormer windows.

A Look at the Church's History

The Unitarian group in Stoneham started in 1858. This church building was then built for them in 1869. The church was a busy place for many years.

From Church to TV Station

The Unitarian group used this building until 1995. After that, the group stopped meeting there. Today, the building has a new purpose. It is now used by Stoneham TV. This is a local Community Access Television station. They make TV shows for the community!
