Firth is a small village in Shetland, Scotland. It is located on the northeast side of Mainland, which is the largest island in Shetland. Firth is part of the Delting area and is not far from another village called Mossbank. It is about 27 miles (43 km) away from Lerwick, the capital of Shetland.
A Look Back at Firth's History
Firth has a history shaped by both nature and industry. If you visit, you might see old stone houses, called croft houses, on the hill across Firth Voe. These houses are a reminder of a very sad event.
The Delting Disaster
On December 21, 1900, a terrible storm hit the area. Twenty-two local fishermen from Firth were lost at sea. This event is known as the "Delting Disaster". It was a huge loss for the community, leaving many families heartbroken. A stone memorial stands at the entrance to the village to remember those who were lost.
The Oil Industry's Impact
In the 1970s, the oil industry grew in Shetland. This brought many changes to places like Firth. New, temporary homes were built for oil workers. Later, some permanent housing estates were also constructed. Some of these buildings have since been taken down.
