Fisherman Bay is a small coastal town in South Australia. It's located at the top of the Yorke Peninsula. This area is managed by the District Council of Barunga West. Since 1974, a special group called the Fisherman Bay Management Company has owned and looked after the town. This company was started by ten residents who bought the land together.

History of Fisherman Bay

Fisherman Bay is split into two parts. These parts are on either side of the bay's inlet. One part is a small living area south of the inlet. It is near Port Broughton. The other part is larger and mostly empty. It is north of the inlet.

The town has about 400 homes. There is also a shop, a petrol station, and a community hall. The northern part of Fisherman Bay has a big area called "Salt Swamp." It also includes the northern shack site. Further north, you can find the old RAAF Gunnery Range, Fisherman Bay. This historic site is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register.

Early Days and Shacks

People started building simple holiday homes, called "shacks," in Fisherman Bay in the 1920s. The land first belonged to the Hornby family. Shack owners paid them a small fee to use the land.

In 1973, the Hornby family sold the land to local people. The ten highest bidders formed a company. This company was named Fishermans Bay Management Pty Ltd. They bought the village to own and run it.

How the Town is Managed

The Fisherman Bay Management Company still owns the land today. Residents pay a fee to the company. The District Council of Barunga West looks after the beach and coastal areas. The company owns the roads, water, and sewer systems. So, they are in charge of most of the town's services.

Community Life

The Fisherman Bay Progress Association was started in 1963. This group organizes fun events for the town. One popular event is the annual Easter Races. This is a sports day especially for children.

Fisherman Bay officially became a recognized place in 1998. This happened when clear boundaries were set for the long-standing local name.
