Mundoora is a small settlement located in South Australia. It is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) inland from the town of Port Broughton.
A long time ago, around 1876, Mundoora was connected to Port Broughton by a special horse-drawn railway. This railway had a tram nicknamed "The Pie Cart." People described it as a "kind of second-hand coffin drawn by one horse." It was still running in 1923! Later, the tram was moved to a railway museum, and the tracks were taken apart.
How Mundoora is Managed
Have you ever wondered how towns are run? This is called governance. It means how a place is managed and who makes the rules for the community.
Local Councils
The first local government in this area was called the District Council of Broughton. It later changed its name to the District Council of Redhill. Interestingly, Mundoora was never part of the historic District Council of Mundoora. That council was actually based in Port Broughton, which is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) to the west.
Today, the town of Mundoora is part of the District Council of Barunga West. However, the wider area around Mundoora is special because it meets three different local government areas. These are the Port Pirie Regional Council to the northeast and the Wakefield Regional Council to the southeast.
State and Federal Government
When you live in a place, you also have a say in who represents you in bigger governments. Mundoora is part of the state electorate of Narungga. This means people in Mundoora vote for a person to represent them in the state government of South Australia.
For the federal government, Mundoora is in the electorate called Grey. This means people here vote for someone to represent them in the national government of Australia.
