Fithian got its name from Dr. William Fithian. He generously gave some of his land to help start the community. Dr. Fithian moved to Danville in 1830. He had a farm just a short distance west of where Fithian is today.
Abraham Lincoln's Connection
Dr. Fithian was a good friend and supporter of Abraham Lincoln. It is said that Lincoln often stayed at Dr. Fithian's farm. This was in the mid-1800s, before Lincoln became president. He would stay there while traveling for his work as a lawyer. Dr. Fithian also served in the Illinois House and Senate.
A Trading Hub
The village of Fithian was once a busy center for trading livestock and grain. It grew a lot when the Illinois Traction System came through in 1903. This was an electric train system that connected towns. However, Fithian's growth slowed down when the train system declined. This happened especially during the Great Depression, a time when many people faced economic hardship.
