Flag of Birmingham facts for kids
The flag of Birmingham is the official flag for the city of Birmingham in England. It's a special flag that anyone in the community can fly. This flag was chosen in 2015 after a public competition. It's different from the flag used only by the Birmingham City Council, which is based on the city's coat of arms.
How the Flag Was Chosen
In early 2015, a competition was held to design a new flag for public use. Many people joined in, and 470 different designs were sent in.
The winning design was announced on July 23, 2015. It was created by 11-year-old Thomas Keogh and David Smith. Their design was picked because it showed important parts of Birmingham.
What the Flag Means
The flag has a yellow bull's head in the middle. This reminds us of the famous Bull Ring market in the city.
On the left side of the flag, there's an abstract yellow letter "B" on a blue background. The blue color stands for Birmingham's many canals. The city has more canals than Venice!
When you turn the "B" on its side, it looks like the Roman numeral "M". This "M" stands for 1000. It represents Birmingham's nickname, "City of a Thousand Trades." This name shows how many different businesses and industries Birmingham has.
The colors and design of the flag are similar to the city's coat of arms. This helps connect the new flag to Birmingham's long history.
