The flag for the city of Denison, Texas is a special symbol that tells a story about the city's past and what's important to its people. It was first designed way back in 1873, but it wasn't officially approved until November 13, 1968.

What Does the Denison Flag Look Like?

The Denison city flag has three horizontal stripes: green on top, red in the middle, and white on the bottom. A black stripe runs straight up and down through the middle of these colors, and a white star shines right in the center.

The Meaning Behind the Colors and Star

Every part of Denison's flag has a special meaning, helping to tell the city's unique story:

  • The green band represents the green grass of Indian Territory. This area is now the state of Oklahoma, located only a few miles north of Denison.
  • The red band stands for the nearby Red River. This important river forms part of the border between Texas and Oklahoma.
  • The white band symbolizes the many Texas cotton fields that were once very common in the region.
  • The black vertical stripe goes right through the middle of the flag. It represents the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad, often called the M-K-T or Katy Railroad. This railway was very important for Denison's growth and is now part of the Union Pacific Railroad.
  • The star in the very center of the flag represents the city of Denison itself.
