The idea for a Hopi tribal flag first came up in 1993. However, the flag we see today was officially chosen in the spring of 2002. Leigh Kuwanwisiwma suggested the design for the flag in 2002.

The new flag's design was shared in the tribal newspaper. People were asked to share their thoughts about it. The flag shows the Hopi way of life. In the Hopi language, the flag is called Naatoyla.

Every part of the Hopi flag has a special meaning. The colors and the central symbol tell a story about the Hopi people and their traditions.

The Colors of the Flag

The colors on the Hopi flag represent important things like corn and the Hopi way of living.

  • Turquoise (or blue) stripe (sakwa in Hopi): This color stands for Natwani. This means all the traditional crops that the Hopi people grow. It also represents the never-ending cycle of life and the duty to care for your family.
  • White stripe (qöötsa): This color is for Qastiyayngwani. It means purity in life. It also shows the balance that existed when the world was first created.
  • Yellow stripe (sikyangpu): This color represents Sitala, which means many flowers. It reminds us of when plants grow new life. This makes the land feel blessed with renewed spirits.

The Hopi Earth Symbol

The Tuuwaqatsi or earth symbol is the most important symbol for the Hopi people. It is placed in the center of the white stripe.

This symbol is a black ring. It is divided into four sections by a black cross. Inside each of these four sections is a black dot. Below this earth symbol, you can see brown mountains. Two stalks of corn grow from the corners of these mountains. Corn is the main food for the Hopi people. Above this whole symbol, the word "HOPI" is written in black letters.
