What is a Flagrant Foul?
A flagrant foul is a type of personal foul that goes beyond normal game contact. The main reason for this rule is to keep players safe. If a foul is too rough or could hurt someone, it's called a flagrant foul.
In college basketball, which is run by the NCAA, if a flagrant foul is done on purpose, it's sometimes called an "intentional foul."
Flagrant Fouls in the NBA
The NBA created its flagrant foul rule in the 1990s. This rule was made to stop players from making contact that could put another player's safety and health at risk.
In the NBA, there are two types of flagrant fouls:
- Flagrant 1: This is a serious foul where a player makes unnecessary or excessive contact.
- Flagrant 2: This is an even more serious foul. It involves contact that is clearly unnecessary and very rough. If a player commits a Flagrant 2 foul, they must leave the game right away.
What Happens After a Flagrant Foul?
Besides having to leave the game for a Flagrant 2 foul, players who commit flagrant fouls can also be punished with fines. These rules help make sure basketball games are played fairly and safely for everyone.
