Flat, Missouri facts for kids
Flat is a small, quiet place in southern Phelps County, Missouri, United States. It's not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of a larger county.
Flat is located about 16 miles (26 km) southwest of a bigger city called Rolla. You can find Flat where two roads meet: Missouri Route M and Missouri Route T. Another small town, Edgar Springs, is about four miles (6.4 km) to the southeast. It's near where Route M meets U.S. Route 63.
The very beginning of Mill Creek is just east of Flat. This community is also inside the beautiful Mark Twain National Forest.
History of Flat
The community of Flat got its name because of the very flat land in a nearby forest. People decided to call the area "Flat" to describe this feature.
A post office was opened in Flat in 1895. This post office helped people send and receive mail for many years. It stayed open and served the community until 1967. After that, the post office closed its doors.
