Flat is a small, quiet community in Coryell County, Texas, United States. It is called an "unincorporated community." This means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. History of Flat
The area where Flat is located was first called "Mesquite Flat." This name was used when people tried to open a post office there. However, the name "Mesquite Flat" was too long for the post office application. So, they decided to shorten it. The new name became simply "Flat."
Early Days of Flat
The post office in Flat successfully opened in 1897. Its special mail code, known as a ZIP code, is 76526. In 1914, Flat was a busy little place. About 100 people lived there. The community had three general stores where people could buy many different things. There was also a cotton gin, which is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds.
Changes Over Time
By the mid-1920s, the number of people living in Flat dropped to about 25. But by the late 1930s, the population grew again to 125. A big change happened in 1942. This was when Fort Hood, a large military base, was built nearby. A lot of the land around Flat that was used for farming became part of the military base.
In 1960, Flat's population reached 200 people. The local school in Flat joined with the Gatesville ISD in 1963. This meant students from Flat would go to school in Gatesville. By 1970, the population was 210. In 2000, the number of people living in Flat was 861. However, between 2000 and 2020, the population went down to 157.
