History of Flat Lick
Flat Lick is the oldest community in Knox County. People from Europe started settling here before 1784. The community got its name from a special place: a salty rock that wild animals loved to lick. This "salty rock" was a natural "lick" that attracted deer and other wildlife.

Flat Lick is found in the eastern part of Knox County, Kentucky. It's located northeast of the Cumberland River.
A main road, U.S. Route 25E, runs along the western side of Flat Lick. If you travel northwest on this highway for about 9 miles (14 km), you'll reach Barbourville, Kentucky. Barbourville is the "county seat," which means it's where the main government offices for Knox County are located. If you go southeast on the highway for about 7 miles (11 km), you'll arrive at Pineville, Kentucky.
