Discovering Flat Top, West Virginia
Where is Flat Top Located?
Flat Top is found in the southern part of West Virginia. It's about 19 miles (30 kilometers) south of a bigger city called Beckley. You can find it right along U.S. Route 19. The community has had a post office since March 5, 1852.
Why is it Called "Flat Top"?
The name "Flat Top" comes from the land itself! The community sits on a high, level area. This flat land follows the top of a mountain range called "Great Flat Top Mountain." This flat area stretches for almost 30 miles. It goes from the New River Gorge in the northeast all the way to the Virginia border in the southwest.
Mavis Manor: A Special House
Flat Top is home to a very interesting building called Mavis Manor. This manor house is built in the Queen Anne style. It's also an example of Victorian architecture. Mavis Manor was one of the first "Farmstays" in southern West Virginia. A Farmstay is a place where visitors can stay on a farm and experience rural life.
The Lilly Monument
Near Flat Top, there is a special monument called the Lilly Monument. It stands on a small hill to the northeast of the community. This monument was built to honor the memories of two early settlers. Their names were Robert and Fannie Lilly.
