What Were Flav-R-Straws?
Flav-R-Straws were first sold in the United States in 1956. A company called Flav-R-Straws Inc. created them. These straws quickly became very popular with kids and parents.
How Flav-R-Straws Became Popular
The company worked hard to tell everyone about Flav-R-Straws. They used big advertisements, including full-page ads in a famous magazine called LIFE. People even saw an ad for "Flav-r Straws" in a movie from 1956 called "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt." It appeared briefly on a brick wall in the background.
Why Flav-R-Straws Disappeared
Even though they were popular, Flav-R-Straws stopped being sold in 1961. They were quite expensive compared to other ways to flavor milk. Products like Nestlé Quik, Bosco Chocolate Syrup, and Hershey's Syrup were much cheaper. Because of the higher cost, Flav-R-Straws were taken off the market.
Modern Flavored Straws Today
The idea of flavored straws didn't disappear forever! In recent years, new versions of these straws have come out. You might know them as Sipahhs or Milk Magic Straws. These modern straws have tiny flavored pellets inside a plastic straw. When you drink milk through them, the pellets dissolve and flavor your drink!
