Nesquik is a popular brand of food products made by the Swiss company Nestlé. It's famous for making milk taste delicious! In 1948, Nestlé first launched a chocolate-flavored milk mix in the United States called Nestlé Quik. A few years later, in the 1950s, this same product was released in Europe, but it was called Nesquik.

Since 1999, the brand has been known as Nesquik all around the world. Today, you can find the Nesquik name on many different products. These include breakfast cereals, powdered mixes for flavored milk, syrups, ready-to-drink milk, candy bars, and even hot chocolate mix.

The Story of Nesquik

Nesquik started as a chocolate powder mix in the United States in 1948. It was first called Nestlé Quik. In the 1950s, it came to Europe as Nesquik. In countries like the U.S., Canada, and Australia, where it was known as Nestlé's Quik, the name changed to Nesquik in 1999. This made the brand name the same everywhere.

In 1999, a company called Cereal Partners Worldwide also launched Nesquik Cereal. This breakfast cereal is special because it "turns milk into chocolate milk" as you eat it! Nesquik syrup products were introduced in 1981. Ready-to-drink Nesquik milk came out in 1984.

In 2012, Nestlé USA recalled a small amount of Nesquik Chocolate Powder. This was done to make sure the product was completely safe for everyone. It was the first time a Nesquik product had been recalled.

On April 1, 2013, Nesquik USA played an April Fool's joke. They posted a picture of a broccoli-flavored Nesquik drink! They later announced it was just a joke.

In 2017, Nestlé scientists worked on a plan to make their drink mix with less sugar. This was because many people wanted drinks with less sweetness. In August 2023, Nestlé South Africa announced they would stop selling the Strawberry and Chocolate flavors there.

Advertising and Mascots

Nesquik has had many different advertisements over the years. They have used print ads, and ads at big events like the Tour de France and the Olympics. Nesquik has also had several fun mascots!

Early Mascots: Danny O'Day and Farfel

In 1955, Nestlé hired a ventriloquist named Jimmy Nelson to advertise on children's TV shows. Nelson's puppet, Danny O'Day, would say that Quik "makes milk taste...like a mill-ion" (dollars). Danny and a dog puppet named Farfel would sing Nestlé's special song:

Danny: N-E-S-T-L-E-S,
Nestlé's makes the very best...
Farfel: Choc-'late

Farfel would finish with a funny jaw-snapping sound. This sound was actually an accident during Nelson's first audition, but everyone liked it so much that they kept it! Nelson performed this song for 10 years.

The Nesquik Bunny (Quicky)

A cartoon Quik Bunny first appeared on the cans of the strawberry flavor. Later, a friendly, animated bunny wearing a big red "Q" necklace became the new chocolate Quik mascot for TV commercials. He first appeared in 1960 and in his first TV commercial in 1973. The bunny's look was updated around 2005 to be more modern.

In the U.S., the Quik Bunny was renamed the Nesquik Bunny in 1999 when the brand name changed. His "Q" necklace also changed to an "N". He is now on all the packaging and advertisements. In some countries like France, Italy, and Canada, he is known as Quicky the Nesquik Bunny.

The Nesquik Bunny is also featured on other Nesquik products. A LEGO minifigure version of Quicky was even released in 2001.

Bunny's Other Appearances

Groquik (Quikáras)

In France and Greece, Nesquik had a different mascot before the Nesquik Bunny. This was a giant, fat, yellow, hippopotamus-like cartoon creature with a deep voice. He wore a hat with red and white stripes and was called Groquik. In Greece, he was called Κουικάρας (Quikáras), meaning "Big Quik." Many fans were sad when he was replaced by Quicky.

Groquik was created in 1978. He was a puppet character in French advertisements, brought to life by a famous puppeteer named Yves Brunier.

Cangurik

In Portugal, the mascot was a kangaroo named Cangurik. He was replaced by Quicky around 1989 or 1990. There were songs and trading cards featuring Cangurik, and even a fan club called "Clube do Cangurik."

Mr. Nesquik

In Italy, before Quicky arrived, the mascot was an animated box of Nesquik called Mr. Nesquik. He was very popular in the 1980s because of TV commercials and comic book ads. Many free toys and gifts came with Nesquik boxes, all showing Mr. Nesquik's picture. Mr. Nesquik made his last appearance around 1990, just as Quicky was being introduced.

Nesquik Cereal Advertising

Nesquik Cereal is advertised in all the countries where it is sold. Most of the ads are on television, but there are also online and print ads. The Nesquik Bunny is almost always in the ads for the cereal.
