History of the Museum
The museum's story began in 1974. A group of volunteers from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) wanted to save old RAN aircraft. They started collecting items to show the history of Australian naval flying.
They raised $80 million to build a large hangar and event center. In 1990, the Australian Naval Aviation Museum Foundation was created to run the museum.
In 2000, the museum changed its name to Australia's Museum of Flight. It started showing items related to all Australian aviation, not just naval. Then, in 2006, the Royal Australian Navy took over the museum. They changed its name back to the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
Today, the museum displays more than 34 aircraft and many other aviation items.
