Early Life and Education
Fleur Agema was born in Purmerend, a city in North Holland. She grew up in the nearby towns of Monnickendam and Wormerveer. Her parents owned a business in the hotel and restaurant industry.
Before she became a politician, Agema had a career in art and design. She earned three different degrees from art universities. She studied at the ArtEZ University of Arts, the Amsterdam University of the Arts, and the Utrecht School of the Arts. From 1999 to 2003, she worked as a designer and project leader for an architecture company.
Political Career
Agema's career in politics began in 2003. She has been a member of a few different political parties over the years.
Starting in Politics
In 2003, Agema was elected to the Provincial Council of North Holland. This is like a local government for the province of North Holland. At the time, she was a member of the Pim Fortuyn List (LPF) party. However, she and some other members became unhappy with the party's leadership.
In 2004, she left the LPF because of arguments within the party. She stayed on the council as an independent politician for a while. She briefly helped start a new party called Forza! Nederland but soon left to join the Party for Freedom (PVV), led by Geert Wilders.
Member of Parliament
In 2006, Geert Wilders asked Agema to be the second candidate on the list for his new Party for Freedom. She was elected to the Dutch House of Representatives in November 2006 and left her job at the provincial council in 2007.
As a Member of Parliament (MP), Agema focused on important topics like education, healthcare, and public spaces. She successfully worked to raise the minimum age for certain jobs to better protect young adults. She was re-elected five more times, with her last win in the 2023 general election.
Minister of Health
In July 2024, the PVV formed a new government with three other parties. Agema was appointed to two major roles: First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport.
As minister, she faced the challenge of not having enough doctors and nurses. She believed that new technologies like artificial intelligence could help solve this problem. Her government also planned to lower healthcare costs for citizens by reducing the amount people have to pay themselves, known as the deductible.
Agema also worked on a plan called the Integral Care Agreement. This plan was created to make sure healthcare stays affordable and available for everyone, especially as the population gets older. However, some local governments and healthcare groups left the agreement, saying they did not have enough money to make it work.
Personal Life
In December 2012, Agema shared that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a long-term illness that can affect the brain and spinal cord.
Agema has one child, a daughter, who was born in February 2015. Her partner is Léon de Jong, who is also a politician.
