Early Life and Education
Fleur Agema was born in Purmerend, a town in the Netherlands. Her parents owned a business that worked with hotels and restaurants. She studied art and architecture at different universities. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1999 from the AKI ArtEZ University of the Arts. Later, she got two Master of Arts degrees: one in Architecture in 2001 from the Amsterdam University of the Arts, and another in Fine Art in 2004 from the Utrecht School of the Arts. Before becoming a politician, she worked as a designer and project leader for an architectural company from 1999 to 2003.
Political Journey
Fleur Agema began her political career in March 2003. She was elected to the Provincial Council of North Holland, which is like a local government for a province. She was a member of the Pim Fortuyn List (LPF) party at that time. In 2004, she left that party and became an independent member. Later that year, she helped start a new party called Forza! Nederland, but she soon left to join the Party for Freedom.
In 2006, Geert Wilders, the leader of the newly formed Party for Freedom, asked her to join his party and be second on their list of candidates for the national election. In November 2006, she was chosen as a member of the Dutch House of Representatives, which is the main parliament in the Netherlands. She left the Provincial Council on March 14, 2007. As a Member of Parliament (MP), she focused on topics like education, healthcare, and spatial planning (how land is used and developed). She was re-elected several times, including in the 2023 Dutch general election, where she focused on disability care and elderly care.
Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport
After four political parties formed a new government called the Schoof cabinet, Fleur Agema was sworn in on July 2, 2024. She took on two big roles: First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport.
As Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, she is in charge of many important things related to people's health and well-being. One challenge she faces is a shortage of workers in healthcare. She believes that new technologies, like artificial intelligence, could help solve some of these problems. The government also wants to reduce the amount of paperwork healthcare workers have to do, aiming to cut it in half. They also plan to lower the minimum amount people have to pay for their health insurance before it starts covering costs, from €385 to €165, starting in 2027.
Fleur Agema has also been working on extending an agreement called the Integral Care Agreement. This agreement, started in 2022, aims to keep healthcare affordable and available for everyone, especially as the population gets older. However, some groups, like municipalities and professional healthcare associations, have pulled out of the agreement because they feel there isn't enough money. Agema has expressed concern about budget cuts that could affect training for medical specialists.
Personal Life
In December 2012, Fleur Agema shared that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord.
She went on maternity leave on January 13, 2015. On February 17, 2015, she and her partner, Léon de Jong, welcomed their daughter.
