Early Life and Education
Rob Jetten was born in Veghel, Netherlands, on March 25, 1987. He grew up in Uden. He attended Udens College for his secondary education from 1999 to 2005. Later, he studied at Radboud University from 2005 to 2011. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Public Administration. After his studies, he worked at ProRail, the Dutch railway authority. He started as a management trainee. Then, he became a consultant and a regional supply manager.
Rob Jetten's Political Journey
Jetten began his political journey as an advisor for the D66 party. He worked for their group in the Senate. He also led the Young Democrats, a youth political organization. From 2010 to 2017, he was a member of the Nijmegen city council. In 2017, he was elected to the House of Representatives. There, he became the party's spokesperson for important topics. These included climate, energy, railways, and economic affairs.
In October 2018, Jetten became the leader of the D66 group in the House of Representatives. He took over from Alexander Pechtold. At 31, Jetten was the youngest D66 parliamentary leader ever.
When a new government, the fourth Rutte cabinet, started in January 2022, Jetten became the Minister for Climate and Energy Policy. In this role, he helped the Dutch government plan for a greener future. For example, in 2022, they announced plans to invest 750 million euros. This money would help develop a national hydrogen transportation network by 2031.
In July 2023, Jetten announced he wanted to become the leader of the D66 party. He took over from Sigrid Kaag. She decided not to lead the party in the 2023 general election for personal reasons. After the election, Jetten returned to the House of Representatives as the parliamentary leader. When Sigrid Kaag resigned in January 2024 for a role at the United Nations, Jetten became Deputy Prime Minister. He also served as acting Minister of Finance for a few days.
Jetten's time as minister ended on July 2, 2024. This was when the Schoof cabinet took office. In late 2024, when the new cabinet proposed cuts to education in its 2025 budget, Jetten worked with other opposition parties. They aimed to reverse some of these cuts. D66 later withdrew from negotiations in December 2024. However, an agreement was reached a week later to restore 750 million euros of the funding.
During the conflict in Ukraine, Jetten supported increasing Dutch defense spending. He believed Europe needed to strengthen its own security.
