How Flex Started

Flex began in 1969 as a small family business. Joe and Barbara-Ann McKenzie started it in Silicon Valley, California. At first, they made circuit boards, which are like the "brains" of electronic devices.

In 1990, the company changed its name to Flextronics International, Ltd. It was officially registered in Singapore.

Growing Bigger

By 1993, the company got money from investors to help it grow. The next year, in 1994, it became a "publicly held company." This means people could buy shares of the company on the stock market.

In 2000, a magazine called IndustryWeek named Flextronics one of the "100 Best-Managed Companies." This showed how well the company was doing.

Working with Other Companies

Flextronics has worked with many famous companies over the years.

  • In 2006, Flextronics started making some parts for Lego toys. However, in 2009, Lego decided to make those parts themselves again.
  • In 2007, Flextronics bought another big electronics company called Solectron for about US$3.6 billion. This made Flextronics even larger.
  • In 2009, Flextronics was chosen by LG Electronics to make LCD televisions. These TVs were for people in North and South America.
  • Also in 2009, a part of Flextronics called Multek won an award. They were recognized for their great quality and support in making parts for companies like Tektronix and Fluke.
  • In 2010, Flextronics partnered with Brammo, a company that made electric motorcycles. Flextronics helped make and distribute these motorcycles.
  • That same year, Flextronics also signed a deal with Lenovo to make their products in Europe.

New Ideas and Changes

In 2012, Flextronics helped start a new company called Elementum. Elementum focused on managing supply chains, which is how products get from factories to customers. By 2014, Elementum became its own separate company.

In 2014, Flextronics was named as the maker of the Fitbit Force. This product was recalled because some users got rashes from it.

In July 2015, the company officially changed its name from Flextronics to Flex.
