The Flixton Road Mill is a historic tower mill located in Bungay, Suffolk, England. This old windmill has been changed into a home. It is considered a Grade II listed building, which means it's an important historical structure.
The Mill's Story: How It Changed Over Time
The Flixton Road Mill was built a long time ago, in 1830. For many years, it used wind power to grind corn. This was a common way to make flour before electricity was widely available.
In 1918, something dramatic happened: the mill was hit by lightning. This event stopped it from working by wind. After that, the top part of the mill was removed, making it shorter. It was then turned into a house, which is what it is today.
What Was Inside the Mill?
The Flixton Road Mill was a tall building with six floors. It had a special roof that looked a bit like a boat. This roof held the Patent sails, which were the large arms that caught the wind. There were four of these sails, each with ten sections.
The mill used a fantail to make sure its sails always faced the wind. A fantail is a smaller set of sails at the back that automatically turns the main sails. There was also a platform on the second floor. Inside, the mill had three pairs of millstones, which are big, heavy stones used to grind grain into flour.
Sometimes, when there wasn't enough wind, an engine was used to power the mill. The belt from this engine was covered in a wooden box to keep it safe.
Who Worked at the Mill?
One of the people who worked as a miller at Flixton Road Mill was Frederick Robert Burtsal. He was the miller from 1868 to 1874.
