Florence (also known as Florentius) was an important nobleman and church leader who lived in the late 1100s and early 1200s. He passed away on November 30, 1210.

Who Was Florence?

Florence was the son of Floris III, Count of Holland, a powerful ruler. His mother was Ada of Huntingdon. Ada was special because she was the sister of two Scottish kings: Malcolm IV and William I of Scotland. This made Florence a nephew to the King of Scots, which was a very important connection.

Florence's Church Career

Florence decided to work for the church. Before the year 1202, he was a "provost" in Utrecht. A provost is a senior church official who manages a cathedral or a group of priests.

His family connection to the Scottish King William was very helpful. It likely encouraged Florence to seek a church career in Scotland.

Becoming Bishop of Glasgow

In 1202, Florence was chosen to be the bishop of Glasgow. This was a big deal! Glasgow was one of the most powerful and wealthy church areas in Scotland. Being a bishop meant he was a very important religious leader.

Florence also held a major government job. On November 4, 1203, he was recorded as the Chancellor of Scotland. The Chancellor was like a chief minister or a top advisor to the king. They handled many important government tasks.

Why He Wasn't Fully a Bishop

Even though Florence was chosen as the bishop of Glasgow, it seems he was never officially "consecrated." This means he didn't go through the special ceremony to become a full bishop. He was still called "bishop-elect."

Before May 15, 1207, he was still holding onto his right to become bishop. However, in December 1207, he gave up the position. He resigned to Pope Innocent III, who was the leader of the Catholic Church at that time. We don't know why he was never fully consecrated or why he resigned.

Florence's Later Life

Florence later became a monk. He died in Middelburg, a town in Zeeland, which is now part of the Netherlands.
