Ada of Scotland, also known as Ada of Huntingdon, was a Scottish princess. She became the Countess of Holland when she married Floris III, Count of Holland. She lived until after the year 1206.
Ada's Early Life
Ada was born in Scotland. Her father was Henry of Huntingdon. Her mother was Ada de Warenne. Henry was the son of King David I of Scotland. This meant Ada was a princess! Her brothers included two future Scottish kings: Malcolm IV and William the Lion.
Becoming Countess of Holland
In 1162, Ada was asked to marry Floris III, Count of Holland. An important religious leader, the Abbot of Egmond in Holland, made the request. Ada then traveled to Holland with the Abbot. Their wedding ceremony took place on 28 August 1162. It was likely held in Egmond. As a wedding gift, Ada received the County of Ross in the Scottish Highlands.
Life as a Countess
Ada was not directly involved in running the County of Holland. However, her name sometimes appeared in important documents. Her husband, Floris, was a strong supporter of the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick I. Floris often joined the Emperor in battles. A Dutch historian named Melis Stoke wrote that Ada supported her son. This was during a war against William of Cleves. Ada was also known to be able to read Latin. She passed away after 1206. She was probably buried in the Abbey of Middelburg. Ada had given money to this Abbey before her death.
