A Look Back in Time
Rijnsburg used to be its own separate town, or "municipality," until 2006. That year, it joined with another town, Valkenburg, to become part of the larger Katwijk municipality. Before that, Rijnsburg was home to about 14,851 people.
Famous Thinkers and Flowers
One of the most famous people to live in Rijnsburg was a philosopher named Spinoza. He lived here from 1661 to 1663. You can still visit his small house today!
Rijnsburg is also in a special area known as the "Dune and Bulb district." This area is famous for growing lots of beautiful flowers. Rijnsburg is even home to one of the biggest flower auction companies, Royal FloraHolland.
The Old Abbey
Rijnsburg Abbey was a very old and important building. It was started in 1133 by a queen named Petronilla of Lorraine. She was married to Floris II, Count of Holland. The abbey grew and became very successful over many years.
Two of Queen Petronilla's granddaughters, Sophie and Hedwig, later joined this abbey. One of them even became the leader, or "abbess," of the abbey.
Ancient Treasures Found
In 1913, some amazing old items were found in a cemetery in Rijnsburg. These included a fancy buckle, a mount with colorful enamel, and a square coin. The buckle was gilded (covered in gold) and had beautiful patterns. It was probably made in England.
These finds show that important people, maybe even royalty, lived near the mouth of the Rhine river a long time ago.
Important Burials at Rijnsburg Abbey
Many important people were buried at Rijnsburg Abbey. These include:
- Floris the Black
- Petronilla of Lorraine
- Dirk VI, Count of Holland
- William I, Count of Holland
- Floris IV, Count of Holland
