Valkenburg ([ˈvɑlkə(m)bʏr(ə)x]) is a charming village in the western Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland. Valkenburg is now part of the larger municipality of Katwijk.
In 2006, Valkenburg became part of Katwijk. Before that, it was its own separate municipality. In 2006, about 3,900 people lived there.

History of Valkenburg
Valkenburg has a long and interesting past. It used to be an independent municipality. This means it had its own local government.
Merging with Katwijk
On January 1, 2006, Valkenburg joined with Rijnsburg. Both villages became part of the Katwijk municipality. This change helped to organize local services better.
Size of the Former Municipality
The former municipality of Valkenburg was quite large. It covered an area of about 15.74 square kilometers. A small part of this area, about 0.23 square kilometers, was water.
Special Traditions
Valkenburg is known for a very old tradition. It hosts a famous horse market every year.
The Horse Market
The horse market takes place on the second Wednesday of September. It is the oldest horse market in the entire Netherlands. In 2010, this market celebrated its 1066th year! It's a truly historic event.
Valkenburg was also home to an important air base for many years.
The Air Base's Role
The Valkenburg Naval Air Base was built in 1936. It served as a base for naval aircraft. This means planes used by the navy were stationed there. The air base was an important part of the region's history.
Closure of the Base
After many years of service, the Valkenburg Naval Air Base closed down. This happened in 2006, the same year Valkenburg merged with Katwijk.
