About Florent Vollant

His Music and Awards

In 1997, Florent Vollant built his own music studio called Makusham. It's located on his home reserve. This studio is used by many musicians, both from his community and from outside.

His solo album Puamuna was special because it was the first full album he recorded in his own studio. The word Puamuna means 'dreams' in the Innu language.

Florent also released an album of Christmas songs in the Innu language, called Nipaiamianan. This album was very successful! It even earned him a special blessing from Pope John Paul II. In 2001, he won a Juno Award for Aboriginal Recording of the Year for this album. The Juno Awards are like the Grammy Awards for Canadian music.

Helping Other Artists

Florent Vollant also helps other artists. In 2020, he worked as an executive producer for a documentary film called Call Me Human (or Je m'appelle humain). This film is about an Innu poet named Joséphine Bacon.

In 2023, he was also an executive producer for a TV series called Telling Our Story. This shows how he supports storytelling and culture.

He also helps young First Nations musicians. He is a mentor for a group called Nikamu Mamuitun. This group includes talented new artists like Marcie Michaud-Gagnon, Joëlle St-Pierre, Kanen, Chloé Lacasse, Scott-Pien Picard, Matiu, Cédrik St-Onge, and Ivan Boivin. He helps them learn and grow in their music careers.

In 2019, Florent Vollant won the Félix Award for Indigenous Artist of the Year. The Félix Awards celebrate the best music from Quebec.
