About the Florida River
The Florida River starts high up in the mountains at Lillie Lake. This lake is located in the Weminuche Wilderness, which is a beautiful, wild area.
As the river flows, its water is collected by the Lemon Dam. This dam creates a large lake called Lemon Reservoir. This reservoir is about fifteen miles northeast of Durango. The reservoir helps store water for people and wildlife.
After leaving the reservoir, the Florida River continues its journey. It eventually joins the Animas River south of Durango. This meeting point is located on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation, close to the border with New Mexico.
What's in a Name?
