Flotsam is a super cool wordless picture book for kids, written and illustrated by the amazing David Wiesner. It was published in 2006 by Clarion/Houghton Mifflin. This book is special because it won the Caldecott Medal in 2007, which is a really big award for children's books in the United States. David Wiesner has won this award three times! The book tells a story just with pictures, showing incredible underwater scenes and adventures without needing any words.

The Amazing Story of Flotsam

The book Flotsam doesn't have any words, so the whole story is told through its beautiful pictures. It starts with a boy enjoying a day at the beach. He makes an exciting discovery: an old, worn-out camera washes ashore!

Curious, the boy takes the camera's film to get it developed. When he sees the photos, he's totally amazed! The pictures show incredible, fantastical cities hidden deep under the sea. He also sees strange, clever inventions and even real-life sea creatures that look like they're from another world.

The most surprising photo shows a girl holding a picture of another child. That child is holding a picture of another child, and so on. It's like a long chain of people holding photos! The boy quickly figures out that he is just one person in a very long line of kids who have found this special camera.

He decides to join the chain. He takes a picture of himself holding the photo he found. Then, he gently tosses the camera back into the ocean. The camera then goes on its own journey, carried by different fish and sea creatures across the ocean. Finally, it washes ashore again, waiting for another child to find it and continue the amazing story.
