Fluorocarbons are special chemical compounds that are only made up of two things: fluorine and carbon. You might also hear them called Perfluorocarbons. These compounds are part of a bigger family called hydrofluorocarbons.

What are Fluorocarbons?
Fluorocarbons are unique because they contain only carbon and fluorine atoms. This special combination gives them properties that make them useful in many different ways. They are very stable, meaning they don't easily break down or react with other chemicals.
How are Fluorocarbons Used?
Fluorocarbons are used in many important ways. One common use is in insulation. They help keep things warm or cold, which is why they are found in refrigerators, freezers, and even in the walls of buildings to save energy.
They are also widely used as cooling agents, which are often called refrigerants. These are the chemicals that make air conditioners work and keep your food fresh in the fridge. Because they can easily change from a liquid to a gas and back again, they are perfect for moving heat around.
Why are Fluorocarbons a Concern?
Even though fluorocarbons are very useful, there's a downside. They are considered greenhouse gases. This means that when they get into the Earth's atmosphere, they trap heat. This can contribute to global warming and changes in our planet's climate.
The main problem is that fluorocarbons take a very long time to break down in the atmosphere. Some can last for hundreds or even thousands of years! Because of this, scientists and engineers are always looking for new ways to use these compounds safely or to find alternatives that are better for the environment.
