History of Folly Beach
Folly Beach has a rich history. Two important places, the Folly North Site (38CH1213) and the Secessionville Historic District, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special and protected because of their historical importance.
Geography and What Makes Folly Beach Special
Folly Beach is about 11 miles (18 km) south of downtown Charleston. It sits right along the Atlantic Ocean.
The city covers an area of about 18.9 square miles (48.9 square kilometers). A big part of this area, about 6.4 square miles (16.5 square kilometers), is water!
Locals in Charleston often call Folly Beach "the Edge of America." It's famous for its many surf spots. The most popular ones are the Washout, 10th Street, and the Folly Beach Pier. Even though the waves are usually calm, Folly Beach is known as one of the best surf spots on the East Coast.
Folly Beach is a unique beach community. You'll find surf shops, restaurants, gift shops, and cafes along Center Street. This is the main road that leads into the community.
Wildlife at Folly Beach
You might even spot some amazing animals here! Endangered North Atlantic right whales travel along the coast during their migration seasons. These whales are very important and are even the state animal for both Georgia and South Carolina.
