A Look at FCC's History

How FCC Started

The company began in Barcelona in 1900. It was first a construction company called Fomento de Obras y Construcciones S.A., also known as FOCSA. In 1911, FOCSA started working on public services. Their first big job was cleaning and maintaining Barcelona's sewer system.

In 1992, FOCSA joined with another company called Construcciones y Contratas. This company was founded in Madrid in 1944. Together, they formed the Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas, S.A. that we know today.

Growing and Changing

In 1999, FCC teamed up with Veolia Environnement to create a joint company called Proactiva. Later, in 2013, Veolia bought FCC's share of Proactiva.

FCC expanded its business in 2006. They bought the British Waste Recycling Group for a large sum of money. This helped them grow their environmental services.

In 2013, FCC sold its company Alpine Energie to Triton Partners. Alpine Energie had 3,000 employees and built power plants and communication systems.

New Investors and Global Goals

In October 2013, Bill Gates became a shareholder in FCC. He bought a 5.7% stake in the company. This showed FCC's strong position in areas like environmental services and water. These areas align with his ideas about sustainability. Later that year, in December, another investor, George Soros, also became a shareholder.

In December 2014, Carlos Slim, a well-known business leader, became a major shareholder in FCC. This happened after FCC issued new shares.

In 2022, FCC joined the SDG campaign. This campaign was launched by the UN Global Compact Spain. As part of this, FCC and other members work to help with climate change and social fairness. They also support other important global issues.

FCC operates in more than 29 countries around the world. Over 47.5% of its income comes from outside Spain. Most of this comes from Europe and the United States.
