The Fond du Lac River is a river in Wisconsin, United States. It flows through the city of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and empties into Lake Winnebago. This river is an important part of the local environment and has a unique path.

The River's Journey

The Fond du Lac River begins its journey near the towns of Rosendale, Lamartine, and Eldorado. From there, it flows for about 10 miles (about 16 kilometers) towards the east.

Where the River Ends

As the river gets closer to its end, its east and west branches meet up in downtown Fond du Lac. This meeting point is less than a mile (about 1.6 kilometers) before the river flows into Lake Winnebago. Two well-known places, the Supple Marsh and Lakeside Park, are located along the river as it enters the lake.

Understanding the 2019 Flooding

In March 2019, the Fond du Lac River experienced some flooding. This happened on March 13 and 14, causing the river to overflow its banks in the downtown area of Fond du Lac.

What Caused the Flood?

The main reason for the flooding was something called ice jams. These ice jams formed under the main bridges that cross the river in the city. When ice gets stuck, it blocks the water from flowing freely, causing the water level to rise and spill over the banks.

Community Response to Flooding

Because of the rising water, people in some areas had to leave their homes for safety. Crews worked hard to remove the ice jams and help the water flow normally again. Many different groups from the state and local community worked together to help with the cleanup and recovery efforts after the flood.
