Forden Gaer is the name of an old Roman fort in Wales. It's also known as Y Gaer (in Welsh) or possibly Lavrobrinta (in Latin). This fort is located in a place called Thornbury, which is part of Forden in Powys.
The fort sits on the east bank of the River Severn. It was built near an important spot where people could cross the river. This crossing point was close to an old ford called Rhydywhyman.
Discovering Forden Gaer
Historians believe Forden Gaer might be the same fort mentioned in an ancient Roman book. This book is called the Ravenna Cosmography. It lists many places from the Roman Empire.
The fort was built on a Roman Road. This road connected two other important Roman sites. These were Wroxeter and Caersws.
Building the Fort
The first walls of the fort were made from earth. Later, these walls were made stronger. They used wooden beams and clay to reinforce them. Some of the buildings inside the fort might have been made of stone.
The Romans first built Forden Gaer around 75-80 AD. It was used for a long time. The fort was not completely left empty until the time of Valentinian I. He was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 364 to 378 AD.
What We Found There
