Forsan is a small city located in Howard County, Texas, in the United States. In 2020, about 225 people lived there. It's known for its history tied to the discovery of oil in the early 1900s.
Geography of Forsan
Forsan is found in the southern part of Howard County, Texas. It is about 14 miles (22.5 km) southeast of a larger city called Big Spring.
The city covers a small area. It is about 0.29 square miles (0.75 square kilometers) in total. All of this area is land.
History of Forsan
Forsan started to grow as a community in the 1920s. This was because oil was found in the area. Oil companies began to rent land from local owners. The first oil well started producing oil on November 9, 1925.
On May 28, 1928, a new town area was opened for sale. It was on the ranch of Clayton Stewart. People could buy lots for twenty-five dollars each. By December 1928, the growing community was named Forsan. The name came from the idea that there were four oil-producing layers, called "sands," underground. Later, drillers found there were actually at least five of these layers.
A school and several businesses opened soon after. On March 5, 1929, Forsan's post office began working. Forsan quickly became an "oil boomtown." Its population reached 350 people by 1931.
The Great Depression was a tough time for many towns. But it did not affect Forsan as much as other rural Texas towns. The population grew to 400 by 1936. This number stayed the same until the mid-1950s. However, the number of businesses in town did go down.
In 1960, the Elbow Common School District joined with Forsan schools. On March 25, 1961, Forsan officially became a city. Its first mayor and city council were elected. Forsan's population then started to get smaller. By 1980, 239 people lived there. This number went up to 256 in 1990. But by 2000, it had gone down to 226 people.
