Fort Lookout (Kansas) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fort Lookout, located in the northeast part of Republic County, Kansas, was an important military outpost. The U.S. Army built it in 1861, right at the start of the American Civil War. Its main job was to protect a key military road. This road stretched from Fort Riley, Kansas, all the way to Fort Kearney in what was then the Nebraska Territory. The area around the fort often saw conflicts with Native American tribes. Fort Lookout was built on a high cliff, giving it a great view over the Republican River. It was also just two miles south of the Kansas-Nebraska border.

What Was Fort Lookout Like?

This fort was made of logs and stood two stories tall. The way it was built was quite clever! The second story was placed at a 45-degree angle on top of the first. This design gave the fort eight sides, allowing soldiers inside to see the land all around them. Some of the logs even had special six-inch square holes cut into them. These were called rifle ports, and they allowed soldiers to shoot safely from inside the fort. The fort also had a flat roof.

Why Was Fort Lookout Important?

During the American Civil War, many wagon trains traveled along the military road that Fort Lookout guarded. These wagons carried important supplies and people. Sometimes, these travelers faced attacks from Native American tribes. Fort Lookout helped keep them safe.

By the end of the Civil War, the danger from these attacks became much less. Because of this, the U.S. Army decided they didn't need the fort anymore. They left it in 1867 or 1868. However, the fort was used again briefly by the state militia during another Native American uprising in 1868.

What Happened to Fort Lookout?

Even after the Army left, local people used Fort Lookout. Until at least 1870, it served as a safe place for families to go during conflicts with Native American tribes. After that, someone even lived in the old fort for a while. Eventually, the building was left empty. Over time, it either fell apart on its own or was taken down. Today, Fort Lookout no longer stands.
