Fos-sur-Mer (pronounced fose syoor mare, literally Fos on Sea) is a town in southern France. It is located in the Bouches-du-Rhône area, right on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The town is known for its important port and industrial activities.

Geography of Fos-sur-Mer
Fos-sur-Mer is found about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northwest of Marseille. It is situated directly on the Mediterranean coast. To the west of the town is a large saltwater lake called the Étang de Berre. Fos-sur-Mer also boasts 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) of beautiful sandy beaches.
Population Growth
The number of people living in Fos-sur-Mer has changed a lot over the years. In 2021, about 15,469 people lived there. The town has seen its population grow quite a bit, especially since the 1960s. This growth is partly due to the development of industries in the area.

Economy and Industry
Fos-sur-Mer is home to a very important port. This port is managed by the Autonomous Port of Marseille. It has special areas for handling large shipping containers and also a terminal for natural gas. Because it's right by the water, it's a great place for big industries.
Many heavy industries, like steel production, are located here. For example, the ArcelorMittal steel company has a large plant in Fos. Other chemical and oil industries are also present. Due to these large industries, there are efforts to monitor and manage pollution levels in the area.
Sports in Fos-sur-Mer
Fos-sur-Mer has a professional basketball team called Fos Provence Basket. They play their home games at the Complexe sportif Parsemain, which can hold 2,000 fans.
