Four Roads (its Irish name is Tigh Srathra, meaning "house of the stream") is a small village in County Roscommon, Ireland. It's located about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Roscommon town and 28 kilometers (17 miles) from Athlone. Even though it's a small place, Four Roads is very famous for its success in traditional Irish sports, especially hurling.
Sports in Four Roads
Four Roads is well-known for its love of Gaelic games, which are traditional Irish sports. These exciting games are a big part of Irish culture. Two of the most popular Gaelic games are hurling and camogie.
Hurling Success
Hurling is a very fast and exciting sport played with a stick called a hurley and a small ball called a sliotar. Players try to hit the ball through goalposts or into a net. The Four Roads GAA club was started in 1904. It is the most successful hurling club in County Roscommon. They have won the Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship an amazing 34 times! This shows how dedicated and talented their players are.
Camogie Achievements
Camogie is a sport similar to hurling, but it is played by women. The Four Roads Camogie club has also achieved great success. They won seven county championships in a row between 2008 and 2014. This was a fantastic winning streak! In the middle of these wins, they also won the 2010 All Ireland Junior Club title. This means they were the best junior club in all of Ireland that year.
