The Four Seasons Hotel New York is a very fancy hotel in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It opened in 1993. One of its most famous rooms is the Ty Warner Penthouse Suite. In 2012, this suite was listed as one of the most expensive hotel suites in the world. It costs a lot of money to stay there for just one night!

Building History

In the 1980s, a real estate developer named William Zeckendorf bought a large empty piece of land in New York City. It was on 57th Street, between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue.

A hotel expert named Robert H. Burns wanted to build a luxurious hotel there. He talked to Harunori Takahashi, who owned a company called EIE International Corporation. They decided to build the hotel together.

Construction and Ownership

When the hotel plans were announced in 1989, it was going to have a main tower with 46 floors and a smaller tower with about 20 floors. It would have 400 rooms in total. The goal was to finish building by late 1991.

The construction was paid for by a group of six Japanese banks. The hotel was first called the Regent New York Hotel. It was managed by Regent International Hotels. Building this hotel cost more than $1 million for each room!

In 1990, the Japanese economy had some big problems. Because of this, the hotel was sold to the Four Seasons group. This helped the banks get back some of the money they had loaned. Today, the hotel is owned by Ty Warner Hotels and Resorts, L.L.C. The Four Seasons company still operates it.

Hotel Size and Features

The Four Seasons Hotel New York is 682 feet (208 m) tall and has 52 floors. This makes it the second-tallest hotel in New York City. It is also the fourth-tallest hotel in the whole U.S. It is the 78th tallest building in New York overall.

In 2006, a very famous restaurant opened inside the Four Seasons New York. It is called L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon and has a special Michelin star, which means it serves excellent food.

Hotel Design

The hotel is known for its very fancy and beautiful inside areas. These areas have a style called "art moderne." This style uses smooth lines and simple shapes, often looking very grand and elegant.

Two famous architects, I. M. Pei and Frank Williams, worked together on the hotel's design. I. M. Pei was also in charge of designing the public spaces inside the hotel, like the lobby and hallways.

The building's design is similar to older, grand hotels from the 1920s, like the Waldorf Astoria New York. It looks different from some of I. M. Pei's other buildings, which often have a more modern and sharp look.
