The 4th & Vine Tower is a very tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. It stands about 151 meters (495 feet) high and has 31 floors. This building is easy to spot in the city's skyline because of its unique design. The top part of the tower looks like ancient Greek architecture. It was inspired by the famous Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.
The building was once known as the Union Central Tower and the Central Trust Bank Building. Today, it is officially called the 4th & Vine Tower. Even though PNC Bank has signs on the building, "PNC Tower" is not its official name.

History of the 4th & Vine Tower
Early Days and Construction
Before the 4th & Vine Tower was built, this spot was home to the U.S. Post Office and Customs House. Later, the Chamber of Commerce Building stood there.
The famous architect Cass Gilbert designed the building. Construction finished in 1913. At that time, the Union Central Tower was one of the tallest buildings in the world. It was the fifth-tallest building globally. It was also the second-tallest building outside of New York City. It was the tallest office building outside New York City.
The building officially opened on May 1, 1913. The total cost to build it was about $3 million. The 4th & Vine Tower remained the tallest building in Cincinnati for many years. It held this title until 1930. That's when the Carew Tower was completed.
Original Purpose and Later Changes
The 4th & Vine Tower was first built to be the main office for The Union Central Life Insurance Company. This company used the building as its headquarters for many decades. However, the Union Central Life Insurance Company moved out in 1964.
The Tower in Pop Culture
The 4th & Vine Tower has even appeared on television! It was shown in the opening and closing scenes of a TV show called The Edge of Night. This show was a daytime drama that aired from 1967 to 1980. The city of Cincinnati was used as the setting for the show's fictional town, Monticello.
The building also appeared in the opening and closing credits of the TV sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati. Even though the show was set in Cincinnati, it was actually filmed in Hollywood.
