Fowler Island facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fowler Island is a small island in the Housatonic River in Milford, Connecticut. It's the only island in Milford located north of I-95. The island is a quiet, natural spot.

About Fowler Island

Fowler Island sits between two bridges. It is north of the Moses Wheeler Bridge. It is also south of the Igor I. Sikorsky Memorial Bridge. No one lives on the island permanently. However, people visit it for fun activities. These visitors include people who like to fish, watch birds, or hunt ducks. The only way to get to the island is by boat.

Island Features

Fowler Island is not very high above the water. Its highest point is about 2.1 meters (7 feet). This makes it a low-lying island.

Helping the Island's Environment

Since 2011, Fowler Island has been part of an important project. This project helps to restore the island's wetlands. Wetlands are special areas where land is covered by water. Many different animals and plants live there.

The project involves several groups. These include the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, NOAA, and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

What is an Invasive Plant?

A main goal of the island project is to remove a plant called Phragmites. This plant is an invasive species. An invasive species is a plant or animal that is not native to an area. It can grow very fast and take over. When this happens, it harms the native plants and animals. Removing Phragmites helps the island's natural environment stay healthy.
