The Fox Theatre in Redwood City is a historic building. It first opened in 1929. The theatre was updated in 1950. In 1994, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it is a popular place for live shows and events.

The Theatre's Beginning

The Fox Theatre first opened its doors on January 2, 1929. It was originally called The New Sequoia Theater. Ellis John Arkush built it to show movies. Mr. Arkush traveled around Europe. He collected ideas from different buildings he liked. He wanted the inside to feel like Moorish buildings. The outside was designed to look like Gothic buildings. The architects Reid & Reid from San Francisco helped make his vision come true.

From Movies to Live Shows

The theatre was mainly used for showing movies. Just a few months after it opened, the Fox West Coast Chain bought it. It continued to be a movie theatre for many years. In June 1950, the theatre closed for a big renovation. It reopened four months later, in September 1950. After this, it started hosting live performances and shows.

Famous Performers

After its updates, the Fox Theatre became a very popular place. Many famous artists performed there. Some of these included Vanessa Williams, Etta James, Bill Cosby, Chris Isaak, and Neil Young. Other well-known performers were Carl Palmer, Tony Bennett, Melissa Etheridge, and BB King.

A Historic Landmark

In 1993, the theatre was recognized as a special place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important building in history.

New Owners and Reopening

In 2009, the theatre faced some financial problems. It was going to be sold. However, in the summer of 2010, local business owners Eric and Lori Lochtefeld bought it. Their company, Dream Careers Inc., also helped. The Fox Theatre reopened in September 2010. It continued to be a place for live events.

The Latest Owner

In February 2017, Peter Pau bought the theatre. The Lochtefelds said they planned to keep running the theatre for four more years. They wanted to operate it for a total of ten years before retiring.
