The Fox Theatre's History

The Theater's Beginning

The Fox Theatre first opened on January 2, 1929. It was called The New Sequoia Theater back then. Ellis John Arkush built it to show movies. He traveled around Europe to find cool ideas for its design.

He wanted the inside to feel like Moorish buildings. The outside was designed to look like Gothic buildings. The architects Reid & Reid from San Francisco helped make his vision come true.

From Movies to Live Shows

Only a few months after opening, the Fox West Coast Chain bought the theater. It continued to show movies for many years. In June 1950, the theater closed for four months for big changes.

It reopened in September 1950. After this, it became a popular place for live performances. Many famous artists performed there. These included Vanessa Williams, Etta James, Bill Cosby, and Neil Young. Other stars like Tony Bennett and BB King also played there.

A Historic Landmark

In 1993, the theater was recognized as a very important building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are special because of their history or design.

New Owners and Reopening

In 2009, the theater faced some financial problems. It was going to be sold. But in the summer of 2010, new owners stepped in. Eric Lochtefeld and Lori Lochtefeld bought the theater.

They reopened the Fox Theatre in September 2010. It continued to be a place for live events. In 2017, Peter Pau bought the theater. The Lochtefelds planned to keep running it for a few more years.
