History of Foxville
Early Settlers and Village Growth
Foxville was first settled in the late 1700s. German families, who were second-generation immigrants in the United States, moved south from Pennsylvania to this area. Some of the first families to live here were the Brown, Fox, Wolfe, Hauver, and Poorman (Buhrman) families.
Foxville was an important stop on the main road between Hagerstown and Emmitsburg. Around 1800, the Wolfe family built a tavern along this road. As more people settled here in the early 1800s, the village became known as Foxville. It was named after the Fox family, who owned a lot of land in the area.
Churches and Community Life
In 1830, the Mount Moriah Lutheran Church was started. They built a stone church on the north side of the village. A few years later, in 1836, the Mount Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church was founded. They built a log church about a mile south of Foxville.
In the late 1800s, Foxville grew even more. A public school was built, along with a wagon shop and a general store. Thomas Fox, a descendant of the original settlers, ran the general store. The Mount Moriah Lutheran Church was largely rebuilt in 1877. Mount Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church built a new church building in 1902.
Foxville and Camp David
During the Great Depression, a government program called the WPA (Works Progress Administration) helped build a camp called Camp Hi Catoctin. This camp was for government workers and their families. It was located a few miles northwest of Foxville on the mountain.
In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed Camp Hi Catoctin into a special retreat just for the president. He named it Shangri-La. Later, President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed it Camp David. The Eisenhowers even gave many books to the Foxville School. Children of some of the workers at Camp David went to this school. The Foxville School closed in 1962. It was the last two-room school still open in Frederick County, Maryland.
