Frampton Pools is a special place in Gloucestershire, England. It covers about 59.84 hectares, which is like 148 football fields! This area is known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It was officially recognized as an SSSI in 1974 because it's very important for nature.

The pools are right next to the village of Frampton on Severn. They are located in the Severn Vale area. These lakes were actually made a long time ago when people dug up gravel from the ground. Now, they are a wonderful habitat for many animals, especially birds.

The site has lots of open water surrounded by trees and bushes. The edges of the pools also have special plants. These different areas create perfect homes for various wildlife.

Exploring Frampton Pools

There are two main lakes at Frampton Pools. The larger one to the north is called Court Lake. It covers about 39.9 hectares. This lake is deeper and has steep banks. Sometimes, people use it for sailing, which can disturb the wildlife a bit.

The southern lake is called Townsfield Lake. It is smaller and shallower, covering about 20.7 hectares. This lake has lots of plants growing along its banks and is usually quieter. It's a peaceful spot for animals.

Amazing Birds at the Pools

Frampton Pools is a fantastic place for birdwatching! Many different kinds of birds visit here, especially in winter.

Winter Visitors

In the colder months, you can see large groups of ducks like mallards, teal, shovelers, pochards, tufted ducks, and pintails. Sometimes, rarer birds like smew and scaup also come to visit.

Breeding Birds

The lakes are also a great place for birds to raise their young. Tufted ducks, mallards, and great crested grebes all use the pools as a breeding area.

Birds in the Bushes

The plants and trees around the pools are also home to many birds. In winter, you might spot Eurasian siskins, lesser redpolls, and common chiffchaffs. During the breeding season, birds like European turtle doves, common nightingales, Eurasian reed warblers, little egrets, and common kingfishers have been seen here.

Tiny Creatures

Frampton Pools is not just for birds! It's also a great place for small creatures without backbones, called invertebrates. You can find many different types of these animals here, especially beautiful dragonflies.

Fishing at the Pools

If you enjoy fishing, you're in luck! Coarse fishing is allowed at Frampton Pools. This means you can fish for types of freshwater fish that are not salmon or trout.
