Kids Encyclopedia Facts

François Louis Ganshof (born March 14, 1895, in Bruges, died July 26, 1980, in Brussels) was a famous Belgian historian. He specialized in the Middle Ages, especially the early medieval period. He studied at the University of Ghent, where he was taught by the well-known historian Henri Pirenne.

After some time studying with Ferdinand Lot, Ganshof worked as a lawyer. But he soon returned to the University of Ghent. In 1930, he took over from Pirenne as a professor of medieval history. He taught there until he retired in 1961.

What Did François Ganshof Study?

Ganshof mainly studied the history of Flanders during the Carolingian period. This was a time when the Frankish kings, like Charlemagne, ruled a large empire in Europe.

Ganshof's View on Feudalism

One of his most famous books is Qu'est-ce que la féodalité? (published in 1944). In this book, he talked about feudalism. Feudalism was a system where land was exchanged for loyalty and military service.

Ganshof saw feudalism in a very specific way. He believed it was mostly about legal and military agreements. He thought it only existed among the nobles and knights. This idea was different from other historians. For example, Marc Bloch thought feudalism covered all parts of society. Another historian, Susan Reynolds, even questioned if feudalism was a useful idea at all.

Other Important Works

Even though his definition of feudalism is still debated today, Ganshof wrote many other important works. He published many articles and a few books. Some of his other books include Les Destinées de l'Empire en occident de 395 à 888 (1928) and Flandre sous les premiers comtes (1943). In 1946, he won the Francqui Prize for Human Sciences, which is a very important award in Belgium.

Ganshof was known as a top expert on the Frankish kingdoms. He was especially good at understanding the Carolingian dynasty. Many people hoped he would write a full biography of Charlemagne. While he never did, his studies on Frankish history are still very important today. A good English book about his work is The Carolingians and the Frankish Monarchy. Studies in Carolingian History. This book, translated by Janet Sondheimer, was published in 1971. It includes a long list of all his writings about Merovingian and Carolingian history up to 1970.
