The Hôtel Bataille de Francès, place Vendôme in Paris, was home to the Texas Embassy.

The Republic of Texas and France had an interesting friendship a long time ago. This friendship started in September 1839. That's when France sent a special representative named Alponse Dubois de Saligny to Texas. Their official connection ended when Texas joined the United States.

France Recognizes Texas

After Texas became independent from Mexico, many big countries in Europe were careful. They wanted to see if Texas could truly survive on its own. They also wondered what would happen if they officially recognized Texas.

France was one of the first countries to say "hello" to Texas. This happened on September 25, 1839. It was a big step for the young Republic of Texas!

In 1841, France opened a special office in Austin. This office was called a legation, which is like a small embassy. It's still there today, not far from the Texas Capitol building. Texas also opened its own embassy in Paris, France. France even wanted to open more offices in Texas, like in Houston and Washington-on-the-Brazos.

Trading with France

Texas and France traded many things. Texas sent cotton to France. Cotton was very important in Europe back then. It was used to make clothes and other goods. Texas also sent other raw materials, which are basic things found in nature.

France, on the other hand, sent things like iron, machinery, and finished products to Texas. Finished products are items that are ready to be used, like tools or clothes.

Both the French and Texan navies (their navies were like their sea armies) sailed in the Gulf of Mexico. Even though the French Navy was never at war with Mexico, the Texan Navy often was. French ships started visiting Mexican ports less often. Instead, they visited Texas more, which helped their trade grow.
