Learning to Create Art
Frances Bagley first went to the University of Tennessee. She had a scholarship to study journalism. But after taking an art class, she quickly fell in love with art. She realized that art was her true passion.
College Degrees in Art
In 1969, Bagley earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in painting. She received this from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. She soon realized her paintings were ideas for sculptures she wanted to build.
Later, in 1971, she earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree from Arizona State University. In 1980, she received a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in sculpture. This degree was from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
Her Art and Career
Frances Bagley creates sculptures that are both abstract and figurative. Abstract art uses shapes and colors to show ideas or feelings. Figurative art shows things that look like real objects or people. Bagley says her abstract figures try to show the human spirit. They are like symbols of human experiences.
Famous Inspirations
One of her sculptures, The Portrait, is made of unpolished marble. It looks like old classical sculptures but with a modern, abstract feel. Frances Bagley admires artists like Louise Bourgeois and Francis Bacon. They have inspired her work.
Awards and Public Art
In 2008, Frances Bagley made history. She was the first American to win an award at the Kajima Sculpture Exhibition. This important art show happens every two years in Tokyo, Japan.
Bagley has also created art for public spaces. In 2015, a sculpture she made with Tom Orr faced a challenge. This artwork was at White Rock Lake in Dallas. The city thought it couldn't afford to fix it. They considered taking it down.
However, they found a solution! Dallas decided to ask Bagley and Orr to create a new artwork instead. This shows how much her art is valued.
Art for the Stage
Frances Bagley and Tom Orr also worked together on a special project. They designed sets and costumes for the Dallas Opera. This was for the opera's 50th Anniversary show of Verdi's Nabucco. It took them over a year to complete these amazing designs.
