Frances Hussey Sternhagen (born January 13, 1930 – died November 27, 2023) was an American actress. She was known for playing many different kinds of characters. Frances acted in plays on Broadway and off-Broadway, in movies, and on TV for more than 60 years.
She won many awards for her acting. These included two Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and a Saturn Award. She was also nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards. Frances was famous for her roles as Esther Clavin in the TV show Cheers and Bunny MacDougal in Sex and the City. She also appeared in movies like Misery and Julie & Julia.

Frances Hussey Sternhagen was born in Washington, D.C., on January 13, 1930. Her father was a judge, and her mother was a homemaker who was a nurse during World War I.
Frances went to schools in McLean, Virginia. At Vassar College, she became the head of the Drama Club. She impressed everyone by acting out a scene from a play called Richard II. She also studied acting at the Catholic University of America and the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City.
Starting Her Acting Career
Frances Sternhagen began her career teaching acting, singing, and dancing to kids. Her first acting roles were in summer theater plays in 1948. She made her Broadway debut in 1955 in the play The Skin of Our Teeth. That same year, she also started acting off-Broadway and on TV. She won her first Obie Award for her acting in 1956.
Her first movie role was in Up the Down Staircase in 1967. She later appeared in films like The Hospital (1971) and Two People (1973).
Famous Roles on Stage and TV
Frances Sternhagen won two Tony Awards for her amazing work in plays. She won in 1974 for The Good Doctor and again in 1995 for The Heiress. She was also nominated for five other Tony Awards for plays like Equus and On Golden Pond.
In movies, she played Charles Durning's wife in Starting Over (1979). She also played Dr. Marian Lazarus in Outland (1981), which earned her a Saturn Award. She was in Bright Lights, Big City (1988) and Doc Hollywood (1991).
One of her most famous movie roles was Deputy Virginia in Misery (1990). She also appeared in Raising Cain (1992). Both roles earned her Saturn Award nominations.
On TV, she was best known as Esther Clavin, the mother of Cliff Clavin, on the popular show Cheers. She played this role from 1986 to 1993 and received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for it.
Later Career and Awards
Frances also played Millicent Carter on ER. She was Bunny MacDougal, the mother of Trey, in Sex and the City, which earned her another Emmy nomination. She also had a memorable role as Willie Rae Johnson on The Closer.
She appeared in many other TV shows, including Law & Order and several soap operas. She even did a voice-over for an episode of The Simpsons in 2002.
In 2005, she starred in the Broadway play Steel Magnolias. She also appeared in films like The Mist (2007), Julie & Julia (2009), and Dolphin Tale (2011).
