Early Life and Studies
Francesc Fontanella was born in Barcelona, a city in Catalonia. He studied law and finished his degree in 1641. Until 1652, he lived a busy life in Barcelona. During this time, he started writing love poems. He also wrote his first two plays.
His Early Plays
Fontanella's first play was Tragicomèdia d'Amor, Firmesa i Porfia (written in 1642). His second play was Lo desengany (written in 1651). Both of these plays used allegories. This means they used characters or events to represent ideas or qualities. They also included some pastoral elements, which are themes about a simple, peaceful country life.
His Poetry
His poetry became more developed over time. He started using the name Fontano for his poems, which sounded more like a country name. He wrote some very powerful sonnets (a type of poem) after his first wife passed away. One famous poem from this time is "A la mort de Nise."
A New Path in Life
In 1652, a big change happened in Fontanella's life. Around this time, the Reapers' War (also known as the Catalan Revolt) ended with a defeat for Catalonia. Fontanella had to leave Barcelona. He moved to Perpignan, a city that was then part of Catalonia.
His life changed completely there. His second wife also passed away. These events led him to join the Dominican order, which is a group of priests. He then became a priest himself.
Change in His Writings
Because of these big life changes, his poetry also changed. Before, he wrote about love. Now, his poems focused on religious themes. His writing style also shifted from being joyful to more thoughtful and sometimes sad. This contrast was very personal for him. It was also a common style during the baroque period, which was a time of dramatic art and literature.
Francesc Fontanella passed away in Perpignan. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in Catalan Baroque literature. Other famous writers from this time include Francesc Vicenç Garcia and Josep Romaguera.
