Francesc Layret i Foix (born July 10, 1880, in Barcelona; died November 30, 1920, in Barcelona, Spain) was an important Spanish politician and lawyer. He was also a Catalan nationalist and believed in a republic. He was sadly killed in 1920. This happened after many of his friends and other leaders were arrested.
Layret strongly believed in democracy and social justice. He wanted a fair society for everyone. He worked with the working-class movement. This helped Barcelona become known as the "rose of fire." It meant the city was a leader in fighting for fairness.

Francesc Layret's Early Life and Studies
Francesc Layret was born in Barcelona on July 10, 1880. When he was a child, he had a sickness that left him unable to walk easily. Even so, he was a very smart student. He studied two university subjects at the same time: Law and Philosophy. He finished his studies with top grades in 1905.
In 1902, he helped start a group called the Popular Encyclopedic Cultural Association. He led the first team that set up this group. He also wrote its first rules. Later, he was the president of this group from 1906 to 1907.
Layret as a Lawyer for Workers
As a lawyer, Layret helped many workers. He often defended them in court. These workers were usually part of unions, especially the CNT. He worked on many cases that helped improve social conditions.
Layret's Political Career
Layret became a town councilor in Barcelona. He was elected for the Republican Union party. He was put in charge of the city's money. He created a new budget plan. This plan saved two million pesetas.
Supporting Education for All
With the money saved, he created a "Budget of Culture" in 1908. This plan was to build new city schools. These schools would be modern, open to everyone, and teach both boys and girls together. The city council approved his plan. However, the regional government stopped it from happening.
Joining Political Parties
Layret was also part of a group called Solidaritat Catalana. In 1906, he helped start the Centre Nacionalista Republicà. This group later joined another called Unió Federal Nacionalista Republicana. In 1917, he helped create the Partit Republicà Català. In 1919, he was elected to the Spanish parliament in Madrid. He represented Sabadell for his party.
Important Speeches in Parliament
Layret gave some very important speeches in parliament. One speech was about how workers in Catalonia were being treated unfairly. This was after a big strike at a factory in 1919. Another speech was in 1920. He spoke about wanting peace when the government was discussing a war budget.
How Francesc Layret Died
On November 30, 1920, Francesc Layret was killed. He was shot by gunmen from a group called the Sindicato Libre. This group was linked to employers. Layret was leaving his home to go to the government office. He was going there to protest. Many union leaders and politicians, including his friends Lluis Companys and Martí Barrera, had been arrested. Layret was buried in the Cemetery of Montjuïc.
