Francis Gerald Agar-Robartes, 7th Viscount Clifden (born April 14, 1883 – died July 15, 1966) was a British politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party.

A Life of Public Service

Francis Gerald Agar-Robartes was born in London, England. He was the second son of Thomas Agar-Robartes, 6th Viscount Clifden. His older brother, Thomas, sadly passed away during the First World War.

Francis went to school at Eton, which is a famous school. He then studied at Christ Church, Oxford, a well-known university.

Becoming a Viscount

In 1930, when his father passed away, Francis became the 7th Viscount Clifden. A "Viscount" is a title of nobility, like a duke or an earl, but a bit lower in rank. He also inherited Lanhydrock House, a large estate.

After becoming a Viscount, he joined the House of Lords. This is part of the British Parliament, where important laws are discussed and made. He sat with the Liberal Party members.

Serving the Government

During World War II, from 1940 to 1945, Francis served in the government. He worked under Winston Churchill, who was the Prime Minister at the time. This was a special "coalition government," meaning different political parties worked together during the war.

His role was a "Lord-in-waiting." This meant he was a government whip in the House of Lords. A whip helps make sure that members of their party vote the way the government wants them to.

A Special Gift

In 1953, Lord Clifden made a very generous decision. He gave Lanhydrock House and about 160 hectares (which is about 400 acres) of its parkland to the National Trust. The National Trust is an organization that protects important historic places and natural areas in the UK. This gift means that many people can now visit and enjoy Lanhydrock House and its beautiful grounds.

Later Life

Lord Clifden passed away in July 1966, when he was 83 years old. He never married. After his death, his younger brother, Arthur, became the 8th Viscount Clifden.
